BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - UAB baseball seniors Esteban Tresgallo and Even Peterson homered for the first time in their final season as Blazers, but the two long-balls were not enough to boost the team in a seven-inning 13-2 loss to Samford on Tuesday night at Joe Lee Griffin Field.
"Too much Samford offense and too little UAB offense today," head coach Brian Shoop said. "I was happy to see Esteban and Evan homers. Hopefully Esteban getting a home run will spark his offense."
Peterson's home run came with one out in the top of the fourth to put UAB on the board. The opposite-field shot found its way over the wall in left to make it an 8-1 game, then Tresgallo homered to right-center in the top of the seventh.
The Bulldogs controlled the game from the start, plating runs in every inning except the second and fourth. Sophomore Austin Edens led the Samford offensive attack with two home runs, driving in four runs.
Senior Stephen Baggett and junior Josh Floyd each threw three innings for the Blazers. Baggett received the start and allowed eight runs on eight hits. Floyd threw the final three innings, allowing five runs on five hits. Baggett received the loss to fall to 0-1 for the year.
UAB freshman outfielder Jared Nixon accounted for the Blazers' third hit. The speedy left-fielder legged out a chopper to third in the sixth inning.
The Blazers return home on Wednesday to take on Troy at Regions Field. First pitch is set for 4 p.m. UAB takes a day off then returns to action March 4 to host Kennesaw State for a three-game series.
