UAB Beach Volleyball Drops Sunday's Doubleheader

COLUMBIA, S.C. – The UAB beach volleyball team dropped matches to South Carolina and Tulane in Sunday’s doubleheader to close the Gamecock Challenge.
UAB (2-5, 0-2) opened Sunday’s doubleheader against South Carolina (4-3, 1-1), the Blazers’ first CCSA contest of the season.
At the No. 4 position, Jade Vitt and Delaney Wood opened the match with a 21-16, 21-13 victory over Amber Treace and Zahria Richard to give the Gamecocks a 1-0 advantage. Gabbi Moreno and Emily Martinez battled back to knock off Erin Neuenfeldt and Katie McCormick at the No. 5 position, 19-21, 21-11, 15-8.
South Carolina answered by winning three straight sets at the No. 1, No. 2 and No. 3 positions to claim the match, 4-1.
The Blazers faced Tulane (7-2, 1-1) in their second conference match of the season to close the Gamecock Challenge.
Moreno and Martinez opened the match by defeating Sarah Stransner and Miah Diirell at the No. 5 positon, 21-15, 21-18, to put UAB on top, but the Green Wave stormed back and swept at the final four positions to defeated UAB, 4-1.
Martinez and Moreno closed the weekend undefeated, splitting time between the No. 4 and No. 5 position. The pair now holds a team-best 5-2 record.
UAB returns to action on Saturday, March 19, when the Blazers travel to Charleston, South Carolina, for the College of Charleston Duals. UAB faces Pepperdine, UNC Wilmington, College of Charleston and Lincoln Memorial over the two-day tournament.
