BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The UAB baseball team dropped the front-end of its Ole Miss series 8-1 on Tuesday night at Regions Field. The No. 8 Rebels improved to 16-1 with the victory, maintaining the best record in the SEC West.
“They are 16-1 and ranked No. 8 in the country for a reason. They are really good,” head coach Brian Shoop said. “I thought we played them pretty good. In the bottom of the seventh, we were one pitch away from having Esteban up with the bases loaded as the tying run and the guy to get it out of here. They’re just very good.”
The Blazers (6-10, 0-0 C-USA) mustered five hits, led by senior Esteban Tresgallo and redshirt sophomore Holt Davis. Tresgallo was 2-for-4 with a double, and Davis’ two base hits were his first in two games played.
Pitcher Adam Lamar (2-1) threw three innings in his fourth start, and was roughed for three runs on four hits en route to his first loss of the season. The left-hander struck out two and threw 70 pitches in the outing.
Early jitters got to Lamar in the first as he issued two of his three walks to the first two batters in the Ole Miss order. The Rebels took advantage of the leadoff passes, scoring three runs along with a couple of hits.
Garrett Whitlock threw the fourth and fifth, allowing two runs on four hits. Cameron Dishon homered against the freshman in the fourth, and Ole Miss manufactured another in the fifth on two hits.
UAB found its way on the board in the seventh on a couple of hits from Davis freshman Carter Pharis. Pharis laced a one-out single to left, stole second and scored on an RBI groundout from Mitch Williams. The Blazers threatened with runners on the corners later in the frame, but Ole Miss reliever Brian Browning found his way out of the inning with no further damage done.
Left-hander Dylan Munger held the Rebels scoreless through the sixth and seventh, giving up just two hits, but three insurance runs plated against reliever Thomas Lowery in the final two games to put the game out of reach.
The two teams are back in action tomorrow at Regions Field at 11:30 a.m. Admission to Wednesday’s special start-time is free. Everyone is invited to take a long lunch to catch the Blazers take on their first ranked opponent of the season.
The Blazers return to action Friday as they host LA Tech for a three-game set at Regions Field to open Conference USA play.
