UAB Tests No. 71 Arizona, Falls to Wildcats 4-2

TUCSON, Ariz. – The UAB women’s tennis team jumped out to an early lead thanks to doubles play, but Arizona’s singles play earned the Wildcats a 4-2 win at the LaNelle Robson Tennis Center on Thursday afternoon.
After earning a 1-0 lead in doubles, the Blazers gave the Bears a scare with a late rally by Reghan Lynch on court six, and a near come-from-behind victory from Elaine Simon on court two; but it was not enough to outlast Arizona.
In doubles action, on court one, after being down, 2-1, Pardis Kianoush and Simon refused to go down easily, knotting the match at 2-all. The Blazers’ top-ranked duo secured four straight sets to give UAB a 1-0 advantage.
On court three, Catherine Ragon and Lynch jumped out to an early 2-0 lead, which was enough to outlast the Bears, 6-2, as they secured a 1-0 lead for UAB.
Sophie Dodds and Amy Lowther, who represented the Blazers on court two for the first time this season, jumped out to an early 2-1 lead; but the Bears claimed five straight sets to defeat the duo, 6-2.
In singles play, the Wildcats quickly knotted the match at 1-all with a 6-0, 6-0 sweep of Sophie Dodds on court four.
On court one, Arizona earned its first lead of the day, 2-1, as No. 31 Lauren Marker blanked the Blazers’ Kianoush, 6-0, 6-0. Ragon put up a fight on court three for the Blazers; but Arizona’s Devin Chypyha earned a 6-1, 6-0 victory to extend the Bears’ lead to 3-1.
On court six, Lynch earned her second point of the day with a 6-3, 6-4 gutsy win over Kinga Gartner, cutting the Wildcats'’ lead to 3-2.
After dropping her first set to Shayne Austin, Simon bounced back with a hard-fought 7-5 victory in the second. Simon got down, 3-0, early in the final set, which proved to be too much to overcome as Arizona earned a 6-2, 5-7, 6-1 win to claim a 4-2 victory.
On court five, Lowther and Samantha Czarniak tested each other with Czarniak holding a slight 7-6, 2-1 lead.
