UAB Splits in Final Day of Catamount Volleyball Classic

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The UAB volleyball team split a pair of matches to close out the Catamount Volleyball Classic in Cullowhee, N.C., on Saturday. The Blazers started the day with a 3-2 loss against Tennessee Tech and finished with a 3-1 win over Charleston Southern.
Junior college transfer Erika Zembyla continues to stand out for the Blazers as she totaled 36 kills in the two matches.
UAB 2, Tennessee Tech 3
UAB (0-2) hit .222 in the match while Tennessee Tech (2-0) posted a .256 attack percentage and continues to be perfect in the Catamount Volleyball Classic.
Zembyla led the Blazers with an astounding 21 kills and two service aces. Victoria Young started all five sets and recorded 14 kills and posted a .407 hitting percentage while Haley Jared was hot on her heels with 12 kills.
Defensively, Emily Martinez bested her career-high 20 digs that she set in Friday’s competition by recording 24 digs in the match against the Golden Eagles.
Tennessee Tech jumped to an early 2-0 lead as the Golden Eagles won the first two sets but UAB battled back and dominated the third set 25-14.
UAB won the fourth set 25-23 in exciting fashion. The Blazers recorded 18 kills and had the best attack percentage of the match with a .432 mark. Tennessee Tech escaped with a narrow 15-11 victory in the fifth set to win the match.
K’Vonna Johnson led Tennessee Tech with 21 kills while Sharon Anderson had a team-high 22 digs.
UAB 3, Charleston Southern 1
UAB showed its strength against Charleston Southern recording 53 kills, 13 blocks at the net and posting a .253 hitting percentage.
The Blazers got seven blocks from Young and six from Petra Silic as they held the Buccaneers to only eight blocks and a .172 attack percentage.
Zembyla once again led the team in kills with 15 and finished the match with a .267 hitting percentage. Freshman Kenley Adams finished the match with the highest attack percentage, a .429 mark.
The Blazers tallied 10 kills in the first and second sets against Charleston Southern. The third set was the closest of the match with 10 ties and two lead changes, but Troy turned a 24-24 tie into a 26-24 victory.
Hannah Western led the way for the Buccaneers with 18 kills and a .378 attack percentage.
UAB will be back in action Sept. 2-3 as it hosts the Blazer Classic in Bartow Arena.
