BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - For the first time in two years, the UAB cross country team has made its way into the NCAA South Region rankings, the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) announced Monday.
"It's very exciting to be back in the NCAA South Region rankings," head coach Matt Esche said. "The ranking represents the hard work the girls have put in this summers and is a compliment to what they have accomplished so far this season. The ranking is also motivation to go after schools in front of us and improve every week."
After a solid weekend of times at the Memphis Twilight, the Blazers enter week one ranked No. 12 in the South Region. All in all, three runners set personal bests at Memphis while Hannah Coffin led UAB with a 17th place finish in the field of 229.
The South region rankings are comprised of Mississippi State, Vanderbilt, Ole Miss, Auburn, Alabama, Florida State, Florida, Georgia, and Georgia Tech. League foe Middle Tennessee, who edged UAB at the Memphis Twilight by 13 points, ranks No. 9 in the standings. Alabama edged nationally ranked Mississippi State to win the meet with 54 points.
This Saturday the team heads to Nashville to compete in the Commodore Classic, hosted by Vanderbilt. The women's 5K is slated to begin at 10 a.m. at Percy Warner Park.
