Blazers Open Season With Fifth Place Finish

NEW ORLEANS, La. – The No. 19 UAB Bowling Team opened its 2017-18 slate with a fifth place finish at the AllState Sugar Bowl Collegiate Bowling Invitational. The Blazers finished the tournament 10-3 overall.
"Today was not the ending of the tournament I was hoping for," head coach Michelle Crews said. "We fought hard in every match but didn't really hit our stride until the last match. The laner were playing different for us than they had the rest of the weekend."
In best of seven match play UAB opened the day with a loss to Tulane. The Blazers forced seven games but dropped the final one 212-158 to set up a match with LA Tech.
The Bulldogs defeated the Blazers 4-2 pairing UAB with Prairie View A&M in the third and final match of the day.
Match three provided drama with a game seven but the Blazers prevailed winning it 179-151 to secure a fifth place finish.
After a second place finish in the Traditional Matches, Taylor Russell was named to the All-Tournament Team.
The Blazers return to the lanes Oct. 27-29 in O'Fallon, Ill., at the McKendree Brunswick Bearcat Open.
"We learned a lot and are excited to take this momentum and information into next weekend at McKendree," Crews said.
