Blazers Make History with Win over Marshall

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Amy Brewer registered her second hat trick of the season and the UAB women's soccer team made school history by running its unbeaten streak to nine with a 4-2 victory over Marshall Friday evening from BBVA Compass Field.
UAB now owns the longest unbeaten streak in school history, surpassing the eight consecutive wins recorded by the 2004 team. The current Blazers have not lost since falling 2-1 in double overtime on Aug. 27 at Memphis.
"I think a lot of the girls took it upon themselves to be extremely detailed and organized in their tasks both on and off the field," UAB head coach Erica Demers said. "We've stressed that to them as a staff over and over, so I think we've nailed that point home, and because of that, we've seen them give everything they possibly can all season long."
Brewer entered play as the reigning Conference USA Offensive Player of the Week after scoring four goals, including a hat trick last Friday at FIU, to lead the Blazers to a win and a draw.
Brewer continued her hot streak midway through the first half with a goal in the 28th minute, converting on UAB's first penalty kick of the season with a shot into the left corner of the net. The Peachtree City, Ga., native added a second goal just over a minute late when her free kick just outside the 18 snuck past the fingertips of a leading Emily Moreland and into the back of the net.
"Last Friday at FIU I was really tired on the bus so Alex Otto gave me some gum and I went out and scored a hat trick," Brewer said. "Then on Sunday she gave me another piece before the game and I got the game-tying goal. So we tried it again tonight and I got another hat trick. It's definitely the gum."
Brewer completed the hat trick in the 55th minute off another set piece, this time using a tapped ball by Rachel Green to allow herself to avoid the Marshall wall and beat Moreland with a shot near post. Brewer now has at least one point in six consecutive matches.
The Thundering Herd picked up a goal from Mary Lawman in the 61st minute to trim the deficit to two, but Green answered in the 87th minute with her sixth goal of the season to push the UAB lead to 4-1.
Marshall added another goal just before the end of regulation when Karen Rogge scored her first of the season.
UAB returns to the pitch Sunday at 1 p.m. when the Blazers welcome WKU to BBVA Compass Field.
