MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The No. 19 UAB bowling team picked up its third tournament team title on Sunday as the Blazers won the 2017 Hornet Classic.
"Every event we attend, the goal is to put ourselves in a position to bowl for a championship on Sunday and this team did just that," head coach Michelle Crews said. "They worked hard all weekend, but no day of bowling is perfect. There is room to grow and get better every time we step on the lanes.
To see this team hold each other up and step up in crucial times was unlike anything I had ever seen this team do before. They did absolutely amazing today. This team won in more ways than a just a trophy today, that was the icing on the cake. I'm so proud of who they are and where they are going. This was an exciting way to end the fall semester!"
UAB opened the final day with a thrilling seven game match against Lincoln Memorial. The teams battled the final frame, but the Blazers walked away with the 4-3 win and a bye heading into the championship game.
Lincoln Memorial defeated Alabama State to reach the championship match setting up a rematch from the earlier in the day. The Blazers and Railsplitters traded wins through the first four games but UAB rattled off consecutive victories in games five and six to earn the win and the tournament crown.
The Blazers only other tournament crowns came in their inaugural season in 2011-12 at the Beach Open and SCS Roundup.
Taylor Russell was named to the All-Tournament Team, her second time to earn those honors this season, after winning the individual tournament by 37-pins over Justine Brookover of Lincoln Memorial.
UAB wrapped up the 2017 portion of its season and does not return to the lanes until Jan. 12-14 at the Mid Winter Invitational hosted by Arkansas State.
