BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – After more than a month off, the No. 14 UAB bowling team is set to return to the lanes this weekend at the Mid-Winter Invitational in Jonesboro, Ark.
"We are excited to kick off the spring in Jonesboro this weekend," head coach Michelle Crews said. "Last year, this event really set the tone for the rest of the season and we are hoping for a similar performance this year. The girls came back healthy and ready to make a statement this spring. They had an excellent fall but there was room for improvement. We hope to generate some momentum this weekend."
The Blazers ended their fall season on a high note, taking home the team title at the Hornet Classic on Nov. 19. Sophomore Taylor Russell walked away with the individual title, routing the competition as the second place finisher was 37 pins short of Russell.
Russell leads the team with a 205.95 average competing in every frame this fall. In addition to her first place finish at the Hornet Classic she also was named to the AllState Sugar Bowl Collegiate Bowling Championship's All-Tournament team after a fifth place finish.
UAB will be among a stacked field in Jonesboro as 13 of the 20 teams are ranked in the latest National Tenpin Coaches Association Poll, including No. 1 Nebraska, No. 2 McKendree, No. 4 Vanderbilt and No. 5 Sam Houston State.
Competition begins Friday at 11:20 with five, five-game Baker matches followed by five Traditional games on Saturday. The tournament concludes on Sunday with team's playing in three best-of-seven Baker matches.
