JONESBORO, Ark. – Three hard fought best-of-seven Baker matches on the third and final day of the Mid-Winter Classic left the No. 14 UAB bowling team in eighth place on Sunday afternoon.
"We had a solid day," head coach Michelle Crews said. "We had a slow start against Stephen F. Austin in match one but came back really strong against Central Missouri. We tried to carry momentum into the last match against Stephen F. Austin and fought really hard to game seven but came up a little short. For the first tournament back after a long break I feel they bowled really well."
The path to eighth place was not easy as all three of UAB's matches were taken to the seventh game.
After opening the day with a win in the first game against Stephen F. Austin, the Lady Jacks picked up wins in the second, third and sixth to force a game seven which the Lady Jacks took 203-170 to win the game.
The loss paired UAB with Central Missouri and after falling down 2-0 early the Blazers battled back for a game seven and took the seventh game in commanding fashion, 238-183, to win the game.
The win paired UAB up with Stephen F. Austin for a second time as the two squads battled to a familiar seventh game before the Lady Jacks took the match 4-3 with a 202-191 win in the final game.
McKendree took home the team title defeating, the defending National Champion, Nebraska in straight games to claim the trophy.
Taylor Russell highlighted the event for the Blazers with a third place individual finish marking her third top-five finish this season.
The Blazers waste no time returning to the lanes as UAB heads to the Kutztown Invitational set Jan. 19-21 in Reading, Pa.
"We have two more practices before we leave for the Kutztown Invitational so we plan to work really hard and come back even stronger next weekend," Crews said.
