MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The UAB women's tennis team dropped a 5-2 decision to Memphis Friday morning at the Racquet Club of Memphis in the opening match of the spring season.
Memphis captured the first doubles match of the day when Claire Sullivan and Josephine Cao defeated Dominika Hrabalova and Jana Hecking 6-1 at No. 3. Hanna Sohn and Katherine Cao clinched the point and put the Tigers ahead 1-0 following their 6-1 win over Hana Sisirak and Alex Shchipakina at No. 2.
Lina Hohnold gave Memphis a 2-0 edge after she defeated Hrabalova 6-0, 6-1 at No. 6, and Anki Wind scored the third point of the match for the Tigers with her 6-4, 6-3 victory over Sisirak at No. 3.
Hecking registered UAB's first point when she downed Katherine Cao 7-6, 6-3 at No. 5 before Marlene Herrmann pulled the Blazers within one point after beating Laura Bente 6-4, 6-2 at No. 2.
Sullivan sealed the match for Memphis at No. 5 with her 6-1, 3-6, 6-2 win over Megan Bertrands.
"It was a tough one to take," UAB head coach Mark Tjia said. "There was a moment there where I thought we may come back and steal the win. I saw more positives than negatives, but we need to get better for our match on Sunday. Marlene had a pair of good wins today and Jana started her collegiate career off with a win."
UAB returns to the court Sunday at 2 p.m. when the Blazers host Kennesaw State at George Ward Park.
