Blazers Win Three Matches at Samford Round Robin

BIRMINGHAM - The UAB men's tennis team claimed victory in three singles matches over the weekend at the Samford Round Robin. Juniors Tom el Safadi and Fernando Vargas and sophomore Brian Akhtar all competed in the event.
The Blazers saw the majority of their success on Saturday when Vargas defeated North Alabama's Meslin, 4-6, 6-2, 6-0, and Akhtar overcame Gustavo Girao (North Alabama), 7-5, 1-6, 7-6. El Safadi fell to North Alabama's Pimenta, 7-5, 3-6, 6-3 on the second day of the event.
Sunday saw the Blazers notch one more victory. Vargas defeated Tom Cecchetto (Southern Miss), 6-3, 3-6, 6-1. Akhtar and el Safadi fell, 6-1, 6-0 and 6-4, 6-0, respectively.
"This event allowed some of our guys who don't see the court as much to get some valuable experience in a competitive atmosphere," head coach Derek Tarr said. "This tournament helped us a great deal in preparing for the rest of the season."
UAB will return to the courts on Wednesday, Oct. 17 in Tuscaloosa, Ala. for the ITA Southern Regional. The event will be hosted by the University of Alabama and will conclude on Oct. 22.
