BIRMINGHAM – The UAB bowling team kicks off its first season as members of the MEAC this weekend when it travels to New Orleans to compete in the Allstate Sugar Bowl Collegiate Bowling Invitational.
Entering competition ranked No. 16 in the National Tenpin Coaches Association (NTCA) preseason poll, the Blazers return their entire squad from last season's historic team and welcome three newcomers who look to make an immediate impact.
"We are thrilled to begin this season in New Orleans at the Allstate Sugar Bowl," head coach Michelle Crews said. "This is one of our favorite events of the year. There will be a good strength of schedule and we are excited to see where we start off the year, as our first year in the MEAC conference."
The team will begin the tournament with five Baker game matches on Friday before competing in five Team games on Saturday. The weekend concludes with three best-of-seven Baker matches concluding the tournament on Sunday.
Suiting up for the Green and Gold in The Big Easy is MEAC Preseason Team member Taylor Russell, Caitlin Cunningham, Rachel Strogin, Rachael Berg, Samantha Johnson, Cayla Davidson, Hallie Herring and Jamie Krasnigor.
Of the eight bowlers selected for competition, Russell, Cunningham, Strogin, Berg and Johnson all participated in last year's rendition of the tournament, while Davidson, Herring and Krasnigor will each be making their collegiate debuts.
UAB is one of seven ranked teams in the field this weekend, including No. 4 Sam Houston State, No. 6 Stephen F. Austin, No. 10 Tulane, No. 11 North Carolina A&T, No. 17 Louisiana Tech and No. 25 Texas Southern.
