CABO, Mexico – Led by a career-best 67 from freshman Lexie Dawson in the final round, the UAB women's golf team moved up three spots on the final day of action and placed 14th at the Battle at the Beach in Cabo, Mexico.
The Blazers shot a season-best 286 in the final round which propelled them from 17th to 14th on the final day. UAB (322-309-286 = 917, +65) rallied to pass Iowa, Denver and Tulsa during the final 18 holes.
"I couldn't be more excited for our team and what's to come," head coach Ryan Ashburn said. "Everything we have been working on this semester seems like it all came together in our third round today.
"I knew they had it in them the whole time and to see it all come together at once was a lot of fun today. This morning I challenged them to be aggressive and press the pedal all the way down and that's what we got."
For the second time this year, Kendall Johnson led the Blazers as she shot +11 overall and tied for 42nd. After an opening round 80 (+9), Johnson recovered nicely and shot consecutive rounds of 72 (+1) to finish at 224.
Tia Teiniketo was UAB's second finisher at +17 and had her best round of the tournament in the final 18 holes, shooting a two-over 73. Teiniketo tied for 63rd overall.
Maria Donado (79-76-78 = 233, +20) tied for 77th, while Dawson finished one shot behind Donado at +21, which was highlighted by her four-under 67 on Sunday.
Stephenie Fowler rounded out UAB's efforts in 88th place at +28, and also played very well in the final round by shooting a two-over 74.
UAB will look to carry the momentum from Sunday's final round into the spring when they begin play at the Amelia Island Collegiate, Feb. 18-19.
