Blazers Run-Rule Army to Close Out the Mary Nutter Classic

CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. – The UAB softball team blasted Army 9-1 to close out the Mary Nutter Classic with a win and improve to 3-7 on the year.
UAB got on the board early when Analyse Petree hit a two-out double down the left field line which brought Megan Smith to the plate. She also hit a double down the left field line which scored Petree from second.
The Blazers put together a big inning in the third pushing four runs across the plate. Destini England reached on a single back up the middle and then stole second. Petree doubled up the middle moving England over to third.
Smith tallied her second RBI of the game as she singled to center scoring scoring England and moving Petree to third. Madison Millsaps reached on a fielding error by the second baseman as Smith moved to second and Petree scored. Raina Cooper came into the game as a pinch runner for Millsaps and freshman Sarah Crawford recorded her first career RBI on a single up the middle.
Rachel Rogers continued the inning as she hit a double to left scoring Cooper from second. Army got out of the inning with a strike out and a ground out but the Blazers led 5-0.
In the fourth, UAB put up two runs on three hits while the Black Knights committed three errors in the inning. England got the fourth started with a single to left and was moved into scoring position off a sacrifice bunt from Makayla Hayes.
Petree reached base safely on a fielding error from the Army shortstop as England moved to third. Rian Brown, pinch hitting for Smith, drew a walk to load the bases. Cooper hit a sacrifice fly to center which scored England from third for the first run of the inning.
Sarah Crawford followed up with a single to short to again load the bases. Smith returned to the game for Brown and in the next at-bat Rachel Rogers hit a single to center scoring Petree. Smith attempted to score from second but was thrown out at home.
Smith moved from third base to the pitchers circle and struck out the first two batters she saw and got a ground out to sit the Black Knights down in order.
Claire Blount came into pitch in the sixth inning and Army finally broke through on the scoreboard. Army's Kristen McPeek drew a leadoff walk and moved to second on a passed ball. Blount got a pop up to third for the second out of the inning but Madison Cole singled to center field scoring McPeek from second.
Cooper got the Blazers going in the sixth with a leadoff single to right and Blount followed her up by reaching on an error by the second baseman who tried to tag Cooper on her way to second but dropped the ball.
Rogers reached on a fielder's choice to short as Cooper was thrown out at third. Crawford, who had come back in to run for Blount, moved to second. Freshman Rachel Owens recorded her first career RBI on a single back through the center of the infield scoring Crawford from second and advancing Rogers to second. Natalie Erwin singled through the left side to load the bases.
Katlyn Sides pinch hit for England and ended the game as she reached on an error by the first baseman and sent Rogers across the plate for UAB's ninth run of the game.
It is UAB's first run-rule win of the season.
Freshman Emily Kachel got the win for UAB and improved to 3-3 on the year. She tossed four innings against Army allowing just two hits while striking out two. Kachel has thrown 12 strikeouts in her last two games and is on a two game winning streak.
Courtney Springman suffered the loss and falls to 0-6 on the year. She threw just two innings for the Black Knights issuing just one run.
England led UAB with three hits and two runs scored while Petree went 2-for-4 with three runs scored. Smith tallied two RBI on two hits with a run scored. Cooper picked up her first career hit and RBI. Rogers also was strong at the plate going 2-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored.
In all, six Blazers had multiple hits while seven recorded at least one.

UAB will return to action on Friday, Feb. 23 against Tennessee Tech in its opening game of the Troy Classic.
