UAB Defeats ULM 4-1 in First Match of Blazer Beach Duals

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The UAB beach volleyball team opened the Blazer Beach Duals with a 4-1 victory over Louisiana Monroe on Friday Morning at the West Campus Athletic Complex.

The Blazers (4-1) were victorious on courts one, two, four and five. Three of those four courts were decided in straight sets for UAB, while Tressa Buckland and Kaylee McClure won a three-set match over Bailey Smith and Allie Kamp 21-16, 16-21, 15-10 on court four.

"We switched up our pairings after the first tournament so it was good to see the girls adjust to the changes this morning," head coach Kyra Iannone said. "We played decent today but will have to raise our level of play tomorrow to come away with two wins."

UAB got off to a fast start on court five and took a 1-0 lead in the match as Erin Bognar and SalliAnne Napolitano made quick work of Holland Ponthieux and McKenna Webster, 21-12, 21-17. Napolitano improved her season record to 4-0 overall with the victory.

Buckland and McClure's three-set victory gave the Blazers a 2-0 advantage, but ULM cut the UAB lead in half with a win on court three, bringing the score to 2-1 with courts one and two still in action.

UAB secured the team victory on court two as Avei Logoleo and Haley Jared defeated ULM's Malie Sellers and Kayla Gallant in straight sets 25-23, 21-16, making the score 3-1 in favor of UAB.

The Blazer duo of Devon May and Kenley Adams concluded the 4-1 triumph for UAB on court one with a 21-19, 21-13 victory over Grace Convey and Gabby Love. May and Adams are now 3-0 as partners on court one.

Today was UAB's only match and the Blazers will return to the courts on Saturday to face Mercer at 10 a.m. and No. 17 Tulane at 2 p.m. in a CCSA matchup.
