LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The UAB softball team dropped both games on Day Two of the Red and Black Classic falling to IUPUI 6-2 and Louisville 6-2 Friday at Ulmer Stadium.
In game one, UAB jumped out to an early 1-0 lead when Sarah Crawford doubled to right field and scored Destini England, who reached earlier in the inning on a walk. The Blazers extended the lead in the fourth.
Megan Smith led off the inning with a single to left and advanced to third on a Rachel Owens single to center field. In the next at-bat, Katlyn Sides brought Smith home with an RBI sacrifice fly to center and the Blazers took a 2-0 lead.
However, things unraveled in the fifth as UAB allowed six runs.
IUPUI (4-8) drew a leadoff walk which was followed by an error and a bunt single to load the bases with nobody out. The Jags got on the board with a sacrifice fly that also moved runners to second and third. A second error in the inning again loaded the bases with just one out.
UAB (6-14) walked in the tying run and a double scored two more. A single allowed the fifth run of the inning to score and a third error by the Blazers let the sixth and final run of the fifth come across the plate.
Emily Kachel got the start for the Blazers and tossed 4.1 innings, allowing six runs on seven hits, but only one of those runs was earned. The Kennesaw, Ga. native recorded five strikeouts on the night and walked only two batters. She took the loss and falls to 4-5 on the season.
Claire Blount threw 2.2 innings against the Jaguars and gave up only two hits.
In the night cap against Louisville, the big inning again defeated the Blazers.
Louisville (13-4) scored five runs in the second inning on four hits. The Cardinals used a one-out single and walk to put runners on first and second and a double to left to score the first run of the second and put two runners in scoring position.
A single to third pushed the second run across and an error allowed the third run to cross home plate. Another single and an error let the fourth and fifth runs score and the Cardinals took a 5-0 lead.
Louisville added its sixth run in the bottom of the fifth with a one-out double to center that was backed up by a single up the middle which sent the runner racing around for home. The throw home was on time but a collision at the plate knocked the ball loose and the runner was called safe.
The Blazers responded in the sixth with Natalie Erwin legging out her third triple of the year to leadoff the inning. Analyse Petree brought her home with a single to center field and Petree, thanks to two errors and a fielder's choice, also came around and tacked on the second run for UAB.
The rally ended with a pop up to first base and a fly ball to left.
UAB got two on in the seventh but were unable to score them and fell to Louisville 6-2.
Blount started against Louisville and pitched three innings allowing five runs on five hits and walked three. She took the loss and falls to 0-7 this season. Kachel also threw three innings of work, giving up one run on three hits and striking out three.
