BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Marlene Herrmann won her 10th consecutive singles match and the UAB women's tennis team cruised to its sixth straight win with a 7-0 blanking of in-state rival Alabama A&M on Sunday afternoon at George Ward Park.
Herrmann, who has not lost in singles action since Feb. 23, clinched the match-winning point against the Bulldogs with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Beatriz Cerezo from the No. 1 position. Herrmann was also victorious in doubles play alongside Sophie Dodds at the No. 2 position, as the duo turned in a 6-1 victory over Cerezo and Alyssa Williams.
Jana Hecking and Hana Sisirak posted a 6-3 victory over Virag Hollos and Rida Khalid at No. 1 to clinch the doubles point for the Blazers.
Sisirak notched her second win of the match and put UAB ahead 2-0 when she downed Ayana Rengill 6-0, 6-0 at the No. 4 singles position. Dodds followed with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Hollos at No. 2 before Herrmann sealed the win at No. 1.
Megan Bertrands (6-2, 6-2), Dominika Hrabalova (6-3, 6-1) and Natalie Voss (6-2, 6-3) also posted singles wins for the Blazers to complete the shutout.
"We managed to get the win today, but we have some soul searching and hard work to do as a team before we face a ranked South Alabama team on Saturday," UAB head coach Mark Tjia said. "It was fun to play alongside the men's team, and it was an added bonus that both teams were able to get the win."
UAB goes for its seventh straight win Saturday at 11 a.m. when the Blazers travel to Mobile, Ala., to face South Alabama.
