BIRMINGHAM – Knocking off seven teams ranked in the top 25 and four that were in the top 10, paved the way for a very successful weekend for the UAB bowling team who finished the weekend with a 10-3 record in the Mid-Winter Invitational at Arkansas State.
UAB (44-18) opened the tournament with five-straight wins over Texas Southern (948-864), Alabama A&M (822-811), No. 10 Stephen F. Austin (941-862), Kentucky Wesleyan (981-865) and No. 22 Maryville (1,056-882). The 5-0 opening day propelled the Blazers into fifth place after day one with a combined baker school of 4,748.
Saturday started with a bang as the Green and Gold knocked off No. 6 Tulane 1,034-933. Taylor Russell, Rachael Berg and Rachel Strogin all bowled over 200, leading UAB to the victory over the Green Wave.
History was made in UAB's next matchup on Saturday as the Blazers beat No. 2 Nebraska 912-872 for the first time in program history. Caitlin Cunningham and Samantha Johnson led UAB in the match with scores of 204 and 200, respectively.
"This weekend was the most exciting way to kick off our spring schedule," head coach Michelle Crews said. "The team was sharp and focused and didn't show any signs of rust even after being off for the holiday break. To take down four top-10 teams and hold our own against McKendree and Vanderbilt was a tremendous result. We have to stay at the top of our game as the next three events are crucial as we prepare for our first try at the MEAC Championship and our return to the USBC postseason."
UAB went on to beat No. 5 Sam Houston State, 1,317-1,353, No. 15 Lincoln University, 890-739, and No. 14 Louisiana Tech, 996-962, rounding out the wins in the tournament. The Blazers fell to No. 1 McKendree (1,239-1,275), No. 3 Vanderbilt (876-921) and dropped a second game to Sam Houston State (869-967).
Up Next
The Blazers will head to Limrick, Pa. to compete in the Kutztown Invitational January 18-20.
