BIRMINGHAM- UAB women's basketball knocked down 13 three-pointers en route to a 77-61 victory over South Alabama in the first round of the WNIT tournament Friday evening at Bartow Arena.
The evening was highlighted by back-to-back record-breaking plays in the third quarter of action as Miyah Barnes became the 30th member of UAB's 1,000-point club and Rachael Childress became UAB's all-time leading three-point shooter.
Both teams got off to a slow start in the first quarter as UAB shot 26.7 percent from the field and South Alabama just 17.6 percent.
The Blazers found their groove in the second quarter sparked by Childress who nailed four threes in six minutes to give UAB a 14-point lead going into halftime.
UAB opened the third quarter on an 11-2 run as Imani Johnson and Trista Magee each knocked down triples and Childress added two more from behind the arc to bring her total to seven on the night.
At the 6:18 minute mark in the third quarter Barnes drove the paint for a layup scoring her ninth point, which marked the 1,000th of her career. On the next possession Childress buried her eighth three of the night and 320th of her career, tying her career high for a single game and setting the UAB record surpassing Amanda Peterson's 319.
South Alabama went on an 18-2 run in the third quarter to cut UAB's lead to six at the 1:22 minute mark. The Blazers closed out the quarter with five unanswered points to increase the lead to 11.
The Green and Gold shut down South Alabama in the fourth quarter holding the Jaguars to just 10 points to claim the 77-61 victory.
"I am so proud of our team," said head coach Randy Norton. "This is the reason we decided to play in the preseason WNIT. To come right out of the gate and have to play a tough South Alabama team, a team that won 25 games last year and returned all five starters. I felt like we were in control the whole game, but they made some runs late and made us have to grind it out at the end."
Childress led all scorers with 26 points, 24 coming from behind the arc. Angela Vendrell recorded her third career double-double with 12 points and 14 rebounds along with two blocks and two steals. Barnes finished with 11 points and six assists in the 50th double digit scoring game of her career.
The Blazers will play Sunday with the opponent and location to be determined by the Oklahoma/Prairie View A&M game later tonight.
