UAB Softball Splits on Day One of Citrus Classic

KISSIMMEE, Fla. - UAB opened day one of play at the Diamond 9 Citrus Classic by going 1-1 in its first two games against the Iowa Hawkeyes and the Morgan State Bears.
The Blazers (6-6) fell short 3-1 against a lethal pitching performance of Iowa's Allison Doocy in game one, and then bounced back with a 6-1 victory over Morgan State.
Game One: Iowa 3, UAB 1
For both sides in game one, pitching held a strong control over the game. UAB's Claire Blount got the green light to face off with the Hawkeyes' lineup for her fifth start of the season.
Blount tallied five strikeouts across the first four innings of work, holding Iowa to only one unearned run that was acquired after three consecutive UAB errors allowed a runner all the way around the base paths.
After five, the score remained 1-0 as the Green and Gold struggled to tap into its offense against the the Hawkeyes pitching attack. Doocy went the entire seven innings, striking out five Blazers.
Behind her, the Iowa defense held UAB scoreless until the top of the seventh inning when sophomore Jenna Olszewski tripled down the right field line with one out to score junior Dylinn Stancil who was aboard after singling to short to lead off the inning.
Despite the action in the seventh, UAB fell short as Doocy finished off the next two batters in order.
Game Two: UAB 6, Morgan State 1
UAB's explosion of offense across the entire lineup lifted the Blazers to a 6-1 victory over Morgan State in game two.
The Blazers found themselves on the scoreboard in the top of the second inning as junior Ashton Clem came in to to score off of a single to right field by sophomore Rachel Owens.
The Bears quickly struck back, answering with one run in the bottom of the second. However, that is all they would get as UAB took control of the rest of the game on both offense and defense.
Offensively, the Blazers tallied three more runs in the top of the third inning off a combined offensive effort by Jenna Olszewski, Natalie Erwin, Ashton Clem, and Claire Blount.
Erwin continued her mark in the fifth inning when she hit a two-run homer, bringing in Sarah Crawford, who was on third courtesy of a double and stolen base, to score. The home run was the first of the season for the junior.
Defensively, the Green and Gold's starting pitcher Sarah Cespedes threw a complete game and racked up 11 strikeouts across her six innings pitched. The freshman's stellar performance rewarded her the win that brought UAB back to an even 6-6 for the sseason.
The Blazers are back in action tomorrow against Morgan State at 11 a.m. CST and Notre Dame at 1:30 p.m. CST.
