Louisiana Tech Completes Sweep Over UAB With 5-2 Victory

RUSTON, La. – The UAB baseball team was unable to avoid the series sweep on Sunday as it fell 5-2 at Louisiana Tech on Sunday afternoon.
UAB (12-17, 1-8 C-USA) has been swept in consecutive road series for the first time since 2016 and in two-straight C-USA road series since falling at No. 7 Rice and No. 30 East Carolina in 2008.
Zack Davis led UAB at the plate with a matching his career high of three hits for the fourth time this season as he launched his second home run of the season and also recorded a double. The junior added a RBI and a scored a run.
Colton Schultz, Carter Pharis, Keegan Morrow and Jess Davis also added a hit, while Morrow plated the other UAB run. J Davis added his 28th stolen base of the season, moving the freshman into the top-five for swipes in a single season.
Austin Bohannon (1-2) took the loss for the Blazers as the lefty made his second start this week. Bohannon allowed four runs on five hits with three strikeouts, lasting only 3.1 innings in today's outing.
Louisiana Tech took a lead in the first inning and never looked back, scoring two runs on a pair of doubles to take a 2-0 lead.
The Bulldogs tacked onto their lead in the third inning, converting on a one out infield single with another single a batter later to push their lead to three. The second run of the inning came around to score on the third single of the frame to push the Louisiana Tech lead to 4-0.
UAB threatened in the top of the fourth inning as Schultz and Z. Davis led off the frame with consecutive hits to break up the Bulldogs' no hitter. Pharis followed with a walk to load the bases, but Ian Ladner grounded into a double play fielder's choice and then Blake Johnson fouled out to the end the inning and the threat.
Louisiana Tech pushed its lead to five in the fifth inning as Parker Bates knocked a single into right field, scoring Mason Mallard to make it a 5-0 game.
Z. Davis put UAB on the scoreboard in the top of the sixth inning with a leadoff, first pitch home run over the right field wall, making the game 5-1.
The Blazers got another run back in the top of the seventh inning after Morrow drew a one out walk and J. Davis followed him by reaching on an error that pushed Morrow to third. Tyler Tolbert plated Morrow on a sacrifice fly to left field to cut the Bulldogs' lead to 5-2.
UAB threatened again in the top of the eighth inning as Z. Davis led off the inning with a double to right center field for his second extra base hit of the game. Pharis followed with a single that moved Z. Davis to third, but Ladner flied out and the Blazers hit into a pair of groundouts to once again end the inning and diminish the threat.
UAB closes its four-game road swing on Tuesday when it travels to Homewood for a rematch with Samford. First pitch between the Blazers and Bulldogs is set for 6 p.m. at Joe Lee Griffin Field.
