UAB Volleyball Drops Season Opener to Ole Miss

TROY, Ala. — The UAB volleyball team dropped its season opener against Ole Miss 3-0 (25-22, 25-19, 25-22) on Saturday afternoon at Trojan Arena.
"The preconference schedule provides an opportunity to compete against opponents we typically don't see," head coach Betsy Freeburg said.
"Today we played a physical Ole Miss team. We struggled to get into a rhythm offensively and they took an advantage of that. We did show growth from last week in our mindset, we just weren't able to finish some sets today."
Outside hitter Fernanda Maida tallied a team-high 13 kills and nine digs. Sam Gomez made her UAB debut registering five kills. As a team, UAB had six aces and five blocks.
The Blazers (0-1) jumped out to an early lead in the first set, taking six of the first 10 points. Ole Miss (2-0) rallied back to tie it at 20, eventually winning set one, 25-22.
A five-point run by the Rebels gave them the lead 12-6 early in set two. The Green and Gold got back within two after back-to-back aces by Maida, bringing the score to 17-15. Ole Miss held on to the lead taking the second set, 25-19.
In a back-and-forth third set, Ole Miss found its way to close it out 25-21 and take the three-set sweep.
UAB returns to the court for the final match of the Troy Tournament against host institution Troy (0-1) on Sunday, Aug. 29 at 2 p.m. The match will be streamed through ESPN+ and live stats are available by clicking here.
"We are looking forward to competing against a scrappy Troy team tomorrow to round out the tournament," Freeburg added.
