Blazers Finish Fifth at C-USA XC Championships

DENTON – The UAB Cross Country Team closed the morning with a fifth-place finish at the Conference USA Cross Country Championships. The Blazers, who finished eighth last year, made major improvements from their 2021 campaign.

"Our goal coming into the cross country conference championship this year was to improve on last year's placement and leave C-USA on a high note. Placing three spots higher than last year's championship continues this momentum we've been building all season," said head coach Maryn Lowry. "Lauren Charlton and Kyra Hayes in their first conference race earned all-conference awards. Kathleen Schellman moved well in the second half of the race and placed twenty spots higher than she did last year. The team is young with four freshmen making up this group of eight. Seven of the eight that competed today will return to next year's team; that returning experience will be great to have as we look to improve at the next conference championship."

The first Blazer to finish was Lauren Charlton, who crossed the line with a time of 21:59.00. Kyra Hayes followed up with a 20th place finish overall with a time of 22:18.6. Kathleen Schellman followed up with a 30th place finish with a time of 23:07.00. Sangie Lincoln-Velez and Lauren Robinson crossed at 51st and 52nd place.

The final ladies in the Green and Gold to finish would be Gracie Sears and Anna Behmer, who finished with times of 24:21.2 and 24:27.4. Ava Brooks finished with a time of 25:12.7.
