UAB Softball Takes Down IUPUI, Falls to UNA on First Day of Blazer Invite

BIRMINGHAM- The UAB softball team split its two games on the first day of the Blazer Invite. The Blazers defeated IUPUI in five innings 8-0, and fell to North Alabama 11-9.
GAME 1: UAB 8, IUPUI 0
The UAB (5-8) bats were hot on a cold Saturday afternoon at Mary Bowers Field, with a home run by Lilly Crowe to begin the scoring in the 2nd inning. Sierra Frazier recorded her first run of the season later in the second, and it also brought Faith Hegh and Jolie Readeaux home to give the Blazers a 4-0 advantage heading into the third inning. A Lauren Brock single brought Jolie Readeaux home in the third, a Tyler Armistead single got Olivia Valbak and Lauren Brock home, and Lindsey Smith reached on an error by IUPUI (2-10) that allowed Bella Wiggins to cross home plate and make it 8-0 in favor of the Blazers. This became the final score after the 5th inning came to a close, giving UAB the victory.
Six different Blazers recorded hits vs the Jaguars. Makenna Pierce (1-1) pitched all five innings, gave up only one hit, and collected six strikeouts.
GAME 2: UAB 9, UNA 11
The Blazers came up just short in a shootout that saw the two teams combine for 23 hits. North Alabama (10-2) started lightning fast out of the gate, scoring eight runs in the first inning, off of a home run, and five RBI's. The Blazers responded with a scoring run of their own in the bottom of the first, with a Tyler Armistead double bringing home Lauren Brock, and a Sierra Frazier double getting Armistead and Bella Wiggins across home plate. Sierra Frazier later got home to make it 8-4 in favor of the Lions. No runs were scored in the second inning, with each team unable to get a hit. In the top of inning number three, UNA scored one run to make the lead 9-4.
In the bottom of the third, the Blazer offense roared to life, with the first home run of Bella Wiggins's career starting things off, and a Sierra Frazier single bringing home Tyler Armistead. Faith Hegh came up to bat, and recorded a triple which brought Lindsey Smith and Sierra Frazier home. A sacrifice fly by Jolie Readeaux brought home Frazier to tie the game 9-9. The game locked up again offensively in innings 4 and 5, with each team making key defensive stands, including an impressive double play by the Blazers in the top of the 5th. Inning number six saw UNA retake the lead, due to an RBI. UAB was unable to get a hit in the bottom of the sixth, and UNA added an insurance run at the top of the 7thon a sacrifice fly. The Blazers had one last shot to score in the bottom of the 7th but were unable to get a hit, and the game ended 11-9.

The Blazers will be in action tomorrow afternoon at 3:00 p.m. against IUPUI, and 5:30 p.m. versus Austin Peay.
