Blazers Win Final Game of WKU Series
4/10/2022 5:14:00 PM | Softball
After a scoreless first inning, Western Kentucky struck first on a 2 RBI double at the top of the second inning. The Hilltoppers were poised to score again with two runners on base and no outs, but the Blazers (21-15, 9-3) lined, flied, and grounded out WKU's next three batters. UAB got on the board in the top of the second with an Oliva Valbak double that scored Jolie Readeaux.
After Western Kentucky (27-8, 11-3) left two runners stranded on base in their turn at bat, UAB took the lead when Sierra Frazier and Jolie Readeaux each hit 1 RBI singles that gave UAB a 3-2 lead. After the Hilltoppers went three up three down in the top of the 4th, UAB added to its lead with a scoring frenzy. An error by WKU allowed Olivia Valbak to score, and then Sierra Frazier blasted her fourth homerun of the year to left field that scored herself, Faith Hegh, and Tyler Armistead. Trailing 7-2, WKU answered with a sac fly RBI that cut the Blazer lead to 7-3. After UAB couldn't get on base in the bottom of the 5th, the Hilltoppers continued to creep back into the game with an RBI double that made their deficit 7-4.
UAB added two insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth with a 2 RBI single that allowed Tyler Armistead and Bella Wiggins to get home. Those runs proved to be the difference in the game, because a furious Hilltopper rally at the top of the seventh nearly prevented UAB from avoiding a series sweep. WKU plated three runners, on a single RBI and a 2 RBI double. Western Kentucky was threatening to steal the game down by two with batters on second and third, but the final WKU batter was grounded out to give UAB the 9-7 victory.
Sarah Cespedes (9-3) picked up the win in the circle. Makenna Pierce was credited with a save. UAB recorded nine hits on the day. Sierra Frazier racked up 6 RBIs.
UAB will host Georgia Tech this Wednesday at 5:00 p.m. It will be Dollar Dog Night, where fans can receive $1 hotdogs while supplies last.
