UAB Softball to Host UTSA for Three Game Series

BIRMINGHAM- The UAB softball team is preparing to host UTSA for three games this weekend. Due to anticipated weather on Saturday, the series will open with a doubleheader on Friday, starting at 3 p.m. before resuming on Sunday at 12 p.m. UAB sits in second place in the West Division standings entering the clash with the Roadrunners. UTSA is coming off a series that saw the Roadrunners take the opening game of the three game set against first-place North Texas, while UAB got a win over Western Kentucky last weekend before falling in extra innings to Georgia Tech.
UAB LATELY
The Blazers are looking to improve their 9-3 record in Conference play, and will be looking to get back in the win column after dropping a close game against Georgia Tech. Lilly Crowe and Sierra Frazier are tied for the team home run lead (4). Four Blazers have 30+ hits on the year. Sarah Cespedes (9-3, 3.95 ERA), Makenna Pierce (5-2, 4.58 ERA), Olivia Valbak (3-7, 3.82 ERA), and Bailey Tindell (2-4, 5.63 ERA) have pitched the majority of the season for the Blazers, with Cespedes striking out 65 in 86.2 innings over 25 outings and 17 starts. As a team, UAB is second in C-USA in total triples (12). UTSA has not won in Birmingham since 2016.
SCOUTING THE ROADRUNNERS
UTSA is looking to shake a three game losing streak, and gain momentum down the stretch in league play. Riley Grunberg leads her team in batting average with a .333 mark, and a .639 slugging percentage. She is also tied for the team lead in homeruns (10). Jamie Gilbert is the Roadrunner's top pitcher, with 50 strikeouts in 72 innings pitched.
First pitch of the doubleheader versus the Roadrunners is set for 3:00 p.m. on Friday. Friday's game is Youth Jersey Friday, where fans aged 17 and under will receive free admission with a school or club jersey.
Softball season tickets are available by purchasing the 2021-22 Gold Card for $65 here. The 2021-22 Gold Card will get you access to all home events for Women's Soccer, Men's Soccer, Volleyball, Women's Basketball, Softball, and Baseball (Regions Field & Young Memorial). This card is not valid for Conference USA or NCAA Championship events.
