School Records Fall as UAB Beach Defeats Mercer, 4-1

BIRMINGHAM – Two major school records were set on Saturday as the UAB beach volleyball team defeated Mercer 4-1 in the finale of the Blazer Beach Bash.
The team win gave UAB its school record 15th victory of the season, while Ella Alexander set the single season record with her 20th individual victory as she is the first UAB player in school history to reach the 20-win plateau.
The Blazers (15-16) have now won 10 of their last 12 matches as they enter the Conference USA Tournament in two weeks with momentum and look to earn a berth into expanded 16-team field at NCAA Nationals.
UAB raced out to a 2-0 lead after the first flight with straight set victories from Emma Andraka and Naomi Ortiz (court four) and Alexander and Jessica Ennis on (court five).
Jenna Gathright and Dylynn Otte then secured the victory on court three with a straight set 21-18, 23-21 victory to give the Blazers a 3-0 lead.
Mercer took court two in three sets, but Rachel Tam and Adriana Pereira concluded the win with a straight set victory on court one.
The Blazers now turn their attention to the postseason as the Conference USA Tournament will be played April 29-30 in Huntsville, Ala.
