UAB Softball Splits on Day One of UAB Blazer Bash

BIRMINGHAM – The UAB softball team defeated Lindenwood 3-2 and fell to Belmont 6-4 on the opening day of the UAB Blazer Bash at Mary Bowers Field on Friday afternoon. The Blazers' record now sits at 3-4 overall.

Sierra Frazier hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the first inning and UAB added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth to earn a 3-2 lead in the opening game of the weekend.

Frazier followed Olivia Valbak's single with a line-drive shot over the left field wall, giving the Blazers an early 2-0 lead.

UAB added a run in the sixth inning which proved to be the game-winner. Lindenwood added two runs in the top of the seventh with a two-run double from pinch hitter Goocher, but Caitlin Russell was able to shut down the remaining batters to hold on for the win.

Belmont (6), UAB (4)
The Blazers were first to draw a scoring run in the bottom of the first off a run from Lauren Brock. Belmont responded with a sacrifice fly to regain the lead courtesy of Haynie to give Green the run in the top of the second inning. The Bruins took the lead 2-1 to shift the momentum in the opposite direction.

The score remained 2-1 before reaching the sixth inning, where Belmont capitalized off an error in the Blazers' left field, giving up two runs to increase the score to 3-1. UAB responded with a series of runs on behalf of a homer from Lauren Brock to tie the score at three apiece, before a sac-fly from Frazier put UAB up four runs to three.

With UAB leading by one entering the top of the seventh inning, Belmont plated three runs to rally for a 6-4 victory.

The Blazers were first to score, bringing their streak of first-inning scoring runs to seven games.
UAB finished with two homers this weekend
The Blazers and Bruins were nearly identical in at-bats, with UAB tallying 24 to Belmont's 29. The Lions totaled more bat appearances and hits than the Blazers.

The Blazers return to action with a doubleheader against Ball State on day two of the 2023 Blazer Bash.
