UAB Gears Up for 2023 Blazer Bash

BIRMINGHAM – The UAB Softball Team (2-3, 0-0 C-USA) comes to Mary Bowers Field and Samford Softball for the home opener for the 2023 UAB Blazer Bash Tournament.
The Blazers welcome four teams this weekend, including an OVC All-Conference Recipient, a first-time meeting with a new NCAA DI member, and a cross-town rival.
UAB returned from the McNeese State Cowgirl Classic, where they went 2-3, including wins over Texas Southern and Idaho State. The Green and Gold were first to draw blood in each matchup, putting up runs in the first inning for all five matchups. On the defensive, the Blazers totaled 29 strikeouts over five games.

SCOUTING THE LIONS
Lindenwood enters their first year at the NCAA Division I level for the 2022-23 Athletic Year. In the softball circuit, the Lions were 35-13, and played in the Great Lakes Valley Conference at the DII level. Entering the 2023 season, Lindenwood sits at 1-4 in their D1 Debut, with their first win coming against Western Michigan.
Senior Amanda Weyh is another player to keep an eye on, with a notable season in 2022. The Makenna, Ill. native set a single-season program records in innings (189), wins (22), complete games (20), strikeouts (183) and WHIP (0.83). The NFCA All-America Third Team honoree collected a number of awards and helped Lindenwood to get their at-large bid to the Midwest Regional for the NCAA DII Tournament.
The Lions sit with a batting average of .165, with Lauren Pelton leading the pack with an average of .357. Lindenwood has a fielding percentage of .953, with ten players with a 1.000.

SCOUTING THE BRUINS
Belmont enters the 2023 season on a new journey, entering the Missouri Valley Conference after leaving the Ohio Valley Conference. They start with a perfect record after a visit to the Troy Tournament last week. The Bruins finished averaging 5.6 runs per game. In their last tournament game, Belmont went into extra innings with the Trojans, and prevailed with a 4-2 win.
The overall record between the Blazers and Bruins spans back to 2006, with all matchups between the two has resulted in a UAB win. The Blazers hold the lead against Belmont with three wins and no losses.
Belmont had four players named to the OVC All-Conference Tournament team, including returner Kristen Green. Green was named to the OVC All-Newcomer Team, All-OVC First Team and Freshman of the year. She tallied 138 at bats with a .333 batting average and .572 slugging percentage.

SCOUTING THE CARDINALS
Ball State opens its season in Birmingham, where the Cardinals take on Samford before traveling to Mary Bowers to compete against the Green and Gold. Last season, BSU finished 22-31 and finished with a conference record of 15-14. Throughout the 2022 season the Cardinals competed against the likes of Arizona State, Northwestern, Stanford and Mizzou.
In the previous season, BSU's McKayla Timmons finished second on the team in batting average with .337. She totaled 86 at bats with a slugging percentage of .558. Timmons tallied 32 starts in the 35 games played as a redshirt freshman. In the field, she totaled 169 putouts, ten assists, six errors and a fielding percentage of .968.

SCOUTING THE BULLDOGS
The Blazers and Bulldogs have a longstanding history of competition where they competed against each other for over two decades. In the overall series between the two, UAB leads Samford in wins with 32, with a record of 12-2 when playing at Mary Bowers Field.
Last year, the Bulldogs finished 34-19 and 15-3 in SoCon competition. In 2022, Samford batted .265, with a slugging percentage. In the circle, pitcher McKenzie Newcomb contributed heavily to the Bulldogs, earning a 2022 Freshman of the Year honor in the SoCon. Her 20 complete games thrown and win-loss record of 21-8 helped the Bulldogs to cruise five games into the SoCon tournament. Entering the 2023 season, Samford was selected to finish at the top of their league with Newcomb, Gwynnie Hornibrook and Jordyn Partain to receive All-Conference recognition from the SoCon.
