Weekly Preview: Softball Hosts TSU, Travels to UNT

BIRMINGHAM – UAB Softball returns to action this week as they welcome Tennessee State to Mary Bowers Field before traveling to the Lone Star State to take on North Texas.
The Blazers come off a series sweep over Florida International, complete with walk-offs, records broken, and three homers over the course of the weekend. The Blazers sit at a .500 record of 16-16 and conference standing of 5-4.

SCOUTING THE TIGERS
The Blazers and Tigers meet for a second time this season after a close meeting on March 15, where the Green and Gold edged out Tennessee State two runs to one. Since the last meeting between these teams, UAB and TSU sit at a .500 record, excluding the tie.
Since the last meeting between UAB and Tennessee State, the Tigers went 2-3, with the two wins coming from a 2-0 win over UT Martin and a 3-0 victory over SEMO. The Tigers also finished with a pitcher of the week honor for sophomore Caitlyn Manus, who finished with a Tennessee Sports Writers Association. Manus helped the Tigers break a 14-game losing streak against SEMO.
Outside of Manus' contributions in the circle, Onnika Spencer leads the way in six offensive categories, including batting average, slugging percentage and home runs. Spencer also led the team with eight RBIs in the Tigers' win over Alcorn State in February.

SCOUTING THE MEAN GREEN
In the 26 games played between UAB and UNT, the Blazers hold the lead by 15 wins to the Mean Green's 11. The last meeting between these two teams came in April of 2022, where the Green and Gold won 2-1. The Blazers are 9-5 when playing at Lovelace Stadium and have gone the last four games with a margin of victory of just one run.
This season, the Mean Green and UAB are in close quarters with identical C-USA records at 5-4 respectively as of March 28. UNT recently were swept by WKU this past weekend, putting them on a four-game losing streak. They are set to take on UT Arlington for a mid-week matchup of their own.
UNT ranks second in slugging with .471, and fourth in stolen bases with 40. The Mean Green also rank second in RBIs with 142 on the season as of March 28. Leading the way on offense for UNT is Kailey Gamble, who leads the team in batting (.356), slugging (.816), RBIs (32) and hits (31). In the circle, McKenzie Wagoner is the ace pitcher with an ERA of 1.57 and limits opposing batters to an average of .197.
