3/8/2023 9:44:00 PM | Softball
BIRMINGHAM – UAB Softball closed their mid-week matchup with a 2-1 loss to No. 9 Alabama. The Blazers' overall record drops to 10-11 overall as they enter conference play for the latter half of the week.
"Exciting atmosphere with a sold-out crowd at Mary Bowers Field," said head coach AJ Daugherty. "Proud of our fight tonight. Proud of our energy. Just need to step up offensively and make a splash. Valbak gave us another fantastic outing against a Top Ten team and we have to support her with more runs."
UAB (1) Alabama (2)
The Blazers entered the game being first to score in the bottom of the first with an RBI single from Lilly Crowe. Lauren Brock found herself running to home plate, holding the Crimson Tide at zero up until the third inning.
Alabama's Prange delivered an RBI single of her own in the third to tie the score at one apiece. Following Prange, Kristen White delivered a run to give Alabama their first lead. The Blazers and Crimson Tide were deadlocked in scoring, with no runs coming between the two for the remainder of the game.
Entering the bottom of the sixth, the Crimson Tide entered Montana Fouts, who delivered three straight strikeouts to the Blazers to bring the game to the final inning. Valbak entered the top of the seventh only giving up one hit, but nothing came of it as a groundout and flyout halted the opportunity for Alabama to score.
In the bottom of the seventh, Fouts delivered another strikeout to Valbak, followed by Crowe grounding out to the shortstop. Lindsey Smith was the final strikeout, bringing the game to a close at two runs to one.
