UAB Cross Country Returns to Action at Southern Showcase

BIRMINGHAM – UAB Cross Country returns to action this weekend, running in the Southern Showcase hosted by Jacksonville State. The women's 5K starts on Friday, September 15 at 8:30 AM at John Hunt Park in Huntsville, Alabama.
The Blazers come off a first-week top-ten team finish, including a top-eight finish by Freshman Katie Keur. Under the direction of first-year head coach Travis Pope, the Green and Gold enter their second race of the year with high expectations.
"The Southern Showcase is our first big meet of the year, giving us a chance to race a lot of our NCAA Regional competition for the first time," said Coach Pope. "Our athletes have had some good workouts recently, building on our success at the first meet. We are excited to see how they do against a higher level of competition."
The Southern Showcase hosts 39 women's teams and 34 men's teams. 12 Blazers will run in the 5K. Returning to the trail are: Keur and Kyra Hayes, who were the top two finishers for the Blazers in the Foothills Invitational. Lia Castillo and Ariana Felton, the additional two newcomers for the 2023 roster, will also run for UAB on Friday.
Returners Alcia Abalos Cervera, Anna Behmer, Ava Brooks, Laura Gonzales, Sangie Lincoln-Velez, Kathleen Schellman, and Gracie Sears will also compete in the race Friday morning for the Blazers.
