BIRMINGHAM - A fast start helped UAB (7-2) defeat North Alabama (3-5) on Friday afternoon at Young Memorial Field, 4-1. The Blazers start 5-0 at home for the first time since the 2017 season.
In that action-packed 1st inning, five straight Blazers reached base safely. Todd Clay drove in Tyler Waugh to give UAB an early 1-0 lead. With the bases full, Mayes White sent a sacrifice fly to right to bring home Nick Hollifield. Landon Beaver added the third run of the inning with a double to score Clay.
UNA answered back in the 2nd inning thanks to Wes Walker double that scored Jaden Sloan from first base.
Cole Cheatham got the start for the Green and Gold. The senior left-hander surrendered just one run through five innings of work. True freshman Brendan Conner pitched the final four innings for the Blazers and earned his third save of the season. Conner has picked up a 3-inning save in all three appearances this season.
Brycen Parrish battled through six innings for the Lions. After the early 3-0 deficit in the 1st inning, Parrish held the Blazers scoreless through the next five innings and allowed just one hit after the 1st inning.
The Blazers picked up some insurance in the bottom of the 7th when Logan Braunschweig sent a home run over the right field fence. With that hit, Braunschweig has now reached base safely in an American Conference leading 37-straight games dating back to last season. The season has also recorded a hit in the first nine games this season.
UAB and UNA square off again on Saturday with the first pitch coming at 1 p.m. from Young Memorial Field. ESPN+ will be televising the game.
