BIRMINGHAM - In a game that took just two hours and 15 minutes, UAB (8-2) got by North Alabama (3-6), 1-0 on Saturday afternoon in front of a big crowd at Young Memorial Field. With the win, the Blazers are off to their best start since the 2015 season. It is the 11th time in the 47 season history of UAB Baseball that the Blazers have started 8-2 or better.
The two teams combined for one run on just seven hits through eight and a half innings of play.
Colin Daniel took the mound for the Green and Gold. The junior right-hander tossed seven shutout innings, struck out three, and faced 22 batters. Ryan Olson picked up the last six outs for the Blazers and earned his second save of the season.
Tripp Patterson threw eight innings on just 95 pitches for the Lions. The true freshman left-hander only had one strikeout, but induced 14 groundouts by the UAB offense.
Both sides went down in order through the first two innings. Daniel worked around a leadoff base hit to start the 3rd inning. The Blazers did not record a hit until the 6th inning.
That hit belonged to Camden Hayslip who led off the 6th with an infield single. Some costly base running errors ran the Blazers out of the inning.
Logan Braunschweig led off the bottom of the 7th with a hit by pitch on the first pitch of the inning. Two stolen bases later, including a double steal with Todd Clay, UAB had two on with one out. Braxton Brooks grounded out to second with two strikes to score Braunschweig from third for the Blazers' only run of the game.
The Green and Gold turned three double plays on Saturday. One in the 4th inning, one to get the Blazers out of a jam in the 7th inning, and another to end the game in the 9th. The Blazers have turned 14 double plays this season which puts them comfortably in the top 5 in Division 1 for double plays turned.
UAB aims for its second consecutive weekend sweep tomorrow at noon at Young Memorial Field against North Alabama. ESPN+ will be televising the game.
