UAB Drops Midweek Game to Jacksonville State

JACKSONVILLE - UAB Baseball (20-21) could not overcome an early deficit as the Blazers dropped their midweek game to Jacksonville State (24-17) on Tuesday night, 9-5. Prior to first pitch, rain delayed the game an hour and 15 minutes.

The Green and Gold jumped out in front first in the top of the 1st courtesy of an RBI infield single by Camden Hayslip that scored Wesley Helms from third and put the Blazers up 1-0.

The Gamecocks answered back in the bottom half of the inning. Cooper Blauser dropped a single into right field to score Drew Collins to tie the game. Then, the Gamecocks successfully pulled off a double steal which allowed Blauser to steal home and JSU took a 2-1 lead.

In the bottom of the 3rd, the Gamecocks got their big inning. A bases loaded walk and a 2-run double put the Gamecocks up 5-1. A dropped pop fly scored another run, then a sac fly made it 7-1. With the inning still alive, Drew Collins doubled to give JSU its sixth run of the inning and gave JSU an 8-1 advantage.

The Blazers would get a run back in the top of the 4th as Jake Merrick brought home John Paul Head on a sac fly to cut the lead to 8-2.

Both sides were held scoreless until the top of the 6th when Landon Beaver sent a double into the left center field gap to score Nick Hollifield all the way from first and cut the deficit to 8-3.

JSU's only run in the back half of the game came in the bottom of the 6th on a home run to right field by Brady Thomas.

The Blazers would inch closer in the top of the 8th. Hayslip's second hit of the night was an RBI single that beat the shifted infield to score Helms. Hayslip advanced to second and Todd Clay scored as the Gamecocks had an overthrow from the outfield. That brought the score to 9-5 and the score would hold as Jacksonville State sweeps the season series.

NOTES

Camden Hayslip recorded his sixth multi-hit game of the season. Hayslip also has nine multi-RBI games.
Logan Braunschweig has now reached base safely in 40 of 41 games this season.
Todd Clay tallied his 14th multi-hit game of the season which ties him for the team lead.
Nick Hollifield has reached base safely in 20 straight games.

UAB returns home this weekend as it hosts Rice for a 3-game series beginning on Friday.
