UAB Wins 3-2 Thriller Over UTEP at CUSA Championship

BIRMINGHAM – The UAB beach volleyball team advanced in the Conference USA Tournament with a thrilling 3-2 victory over UTEP on Thursday afternoon at Sugar Beach in Youngsville, La.
UAB's Court 3 pair of Klea Sirois and Lauren Cairo played the role of hero. With the match tied 2-2, Sirois and Cairo rallied to win the third and decisive set 21-19 with the match on the line.
UAB has now won eight straight matches and claimed its first 20-win season in school history with the victory. The Blazers are 20-10 overall and take on top-seeded and 16th ranked Florida Atlantic on Friday at 10 a.m. CT on ESPN+.
The Blazers raced out to a 2-0 lead with victories on courts one and four in straight sets. On Court 1, Jasmine Haas and Olivia Stant ran their record to 25-5 with the win and have won 12-straight matches together. The other point came from Olivia Chychrun and Claudia Stockard as this new pair is now 7-1 together.
UTEP clawed back with a straight set win on Court 2 and a three-set win on Court 5. With all eyes on Court 3, the two teams went back and forth with each making crucial plays, but an ace from UAB followed by an incredible hustle play from the Blazers saw the ball drop and gave UAB the win.
The Blazers look to avenge a close loss to FAU from earlier in the season. Fans can watch the remainder of double-elimination tournament on ESPN+ beginning Friday morning.
