BIRMINGHAM - UAB Baseball (24-30, 8-19) closed its season on Saturday afternoon with a 4-3 loss to Florida Atlantic (36-19, 15-12). Despite the loss, the Blazers outhit the Owls 10-6.
Unlike the other two games in this series, Saturday's game had significantly less runs scored as neither team crossed the plate until the top of the 4th inning. That's when FAU plated a run on a sac fly by Brando Leroux to score John Martinez and gave the Owls a 1-0 lead.
The Green and Gold answered back in the bottom half of the inning. Gavin Lewis Jr. drove a RBI double to right field to score Tyler Harrington to tie the game at one. Then, Jaden Anderson singled to score Lewis to give the Blazers a 2-1 lead.
UAB added another run in the bottom of the 5th on a Nick Hollifield sacrifice fly to center to score Mayes White and put the Blazers up 3-1.
The Owls mounted a rally in the top of the 7th. With two on and two out, Marshall Lipsey stepped in and launched a 3-run home run just inside the right field foul pole and put Florida Atlantic in front 4-3.
In his final collegiate start, Cole Cheatham was outstanding on the mound for the Green and Gold. Cheatham finished with six innings, four strikeouts, allowed just one run and one walk. Isaac Warrick and Brock Hill also contributed scoreless innings.
Carter Holjes picked up the win by tossing two innings of one run baseball in relief. MJ Ballinger recorded his 11th save as he faced the minimum in the final two innings.
