BIRMINGHAM – Wichita State (22-14, 7-5) took the rubber game against UAB (23-13, 8-4) by a score of 10-2. The Shockers sealed the win with seven runs over their final two at bats.
The game was scoreless until the top of the third. Jacob Gutierrez led off the inning with a double and would score on a single by Owen Washburn. The next batter, Nolan Ganter smashed his first home run of the season for a 2-run shot to extend Wichita State's lead to 3-0 through three innings.
Both offenses were relatively silent all the way until the bottom of the seventh inning. With two outs and a runner on, Austin Pierzynski ripped his fourth home run of the season and his second this week to cut the Shocker lead to 3-2. Pierzynski has a hit in seven of his last eight games.
Wichita State got a great start out of Johnny Nuanez. The junior right-hander tossed 6.2 innings and did not allow a run until Pierzynski's home run. Nuanez completed his start on season-high 106 pitches.
WSU began to salt the game away in the top of the eighth inning as it brought seven to the plate with the first five reaching via hits. Nolan Ganter hit his second 2-run home run of the game, and his second of the season, to get the two runs back from the Blazers' half of the inning. Three batters later with the infield drawn in, pinch-hitter Josh Wulfert singled through the left side to bring home Kaleb Duncan and Jayson Jones to give the Shockers a 7-2 lead.
Wichita State would plate three more runs in its half of the ninth on a Jayson Jones 3-run home run to put the game away.
Heitaro Hayashi and Brady Owens finished off the game by combining to throw the final 2.1 innings as neither pitcher allowed a run.
