Blazers Battle Rice to a 3-3 Draw to Open Conference Play

BIRMINGHAM – UAB women's soccer (3-2-3, 0-0-1) and Rice (5-1-1, 0-0-1) battled to a 3-3 draw Thursday night at PNC Field in Birmingham, with both sides trading momentum in a fast-paced, back-and-forth contest.
The Blazers struck first just 59 seconds in when Shevaun Judon finished off a pass from Abbey Burns for her first goal of the year. Rice answered quickly when Jadyn Jaeger leveled the score in the 18th minute before Leah Chancey buried a penalty just two minutes later to give the Owls a 2-1 halftime lead.
UAB roared back after the break. Lailah Stewart equalized in the 51st minute with a pass from Avery Berryman and Caitlin Keeling, and Keeling gave the Blazers a 3-2 advantage less than 10 minutes later, again with Burns providing the assist. But Rice refused to fold, as Naija Bruckner slotted home the tying goal in the 82nd minute, set up once more by Chancey, who finished with a goal and two assists.
The stats leaned UAB's way — the Blazers outshot the Owls 18-8 and held an 11-2 edge in corners. Rice goalkeeper Kirsten Ruf made five saves to preserve the draw. UAB's Leah Parsons recorded four saves of her own.
Up next, the Blazers close out non-conference play when they host in-town opponent Samford on Sunday, September 14. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. CT.
