TAMPA, Fla. – The UAB volleyball team fell in straight sets to South Florida on Sunday afternoon at The Corral.
The two teams traded points early in the opening set, with a Rachel McCollum kill tying the score at 10-10. The Bulls followed with a 6-1 run to gain control midway through the frame. UAB responded with a run of its own, pulling within one at 20-19 after a block by Kennedy Vaughn and Addyson Smock. However, South Florida scored the final two points to take the opening set, 25-22.
The Blazers came out firing in the second set, racing to an 8-1 advantage before the Bulls began chipping away at the deficit. A service ace from Smock extended UAB's lead to 17-12, but South Florida answered with five straight points to even the score. The teams traded points down the stretch before a late 4-0 run propelled the Bulls to a 26-24 set victory.
South Florida carried its momentum into the third set, jumping out to a 7-2 lead. UAB attempted to close the gap, but another surge from the hosts kept the Blazers at bay as the Bulls secured the match with a 25-17 win.
Mia Reese led the Blazers with 11 kills and 10 digs to record a double-double, while Vaughn added 10 kills. McCollum paced the UAB offense with a team-high 24 assists.
The Blazers open the final weekend of the regular season next Friday, Nov. 13, when they host North Texas for Senior Night. The matchup will also mark UAB's first contest inside the newly renovated Bartow Arena. First serve against the Mean Green is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
