Cummings, Russell, Throw Complete Games as Blazers Sweep Day One in Mobile

MOBILE, Ala. - UAB Softball opened the Mardi Gras Classic with a pair of victories on the back of complete games by Olivia Cummings and Caitlin Russell. The Blazers 2-0 day included UAB's first win against South Alabama since 2017 and Hannah Dorsett's 11 assists against the Jaguars, a new program record. Abbi Perkins was the only Blazer to record multiple hits, going 2-for-6 with a pair of walks.
The Blazers cameback from down 3-0 to defeat Jacksonville State. The Gamecocks self-imploded in the middle innings, walking in a pair of runs and allowing Hannah Dorsett to score from first with a pair of errors after a stolen base. Charlee Bennett opened the game for the Blazers with a base-clearing double. Cummings threw her third consecutive complete game, striking out four Gamecocks.
UAB picked up its first win against South Alabama since March 14, 2017, and its first win over the Jaguars in Mobile since 2010. Russell pitched an eight-inning complete game, allowing just five hits and two runs. South Alabama scored in the seventh inning to tie the game after the umpire crew overturned a double play, allowing the tying run to remain at third base. In extra innings, Ashlyn Shirah hit a double down the right field line to score Ansley Eason. A Madeline Flammia sacrifice fly scored Shirah to put the Blazers up two. South Alabama scored in the third on an RBI-triple, threatening to tie again, but could not convert.

- Hope Tucker recorded her 50th career hit with a single versus South Alabama.
- Carlie Wilkins recorded 16 putouts at first base against South Alabama, the most since Alyssa Aguilar's 16 vs Bradley on Feb. 23, 2024.
- Cummings' complete game is the fourth of her career, her third in 2026.
- Russell's complete game was her first start of the season. It is her 12th career complete game.

- Cummings got going early, striking out two Gamecocks in the first to strand two runners.
- Jacksonville State broke through in the third inning with three-straight hits to lead off, scoring three in the inning (0-3).
- The Blazers responded immediately, loading the bases with no outs and walking in a pair of runs (2-3).
- UAB added another in the fourth to tie the game with Dorsett stealing second base before scoring on a pair of throwing errors (3-3).
- The Blazers shut down the Gamecock offense with back-to-back inning-ending double plays in the fifth and sixth innings.

- UAB finally broke the scoring seal with a Dorsett ground ball that ate up the shortstop, allowing Hannah Miles to score after reached on a leadoff single (1-0).
- The Jaguars broke out of their hitting slump just in time, singling to lead off the seventh inning. The leadoff runner advanced to third on a bunt and later scored on a groundball back to Russell (1-1)
- Perkins walked to set up a clutch inning for the Blazers. Eason pinch ran for Perkins.
