BIRMINGHAM – UAB women's basketball (10-17, 3-12 American) led for much of the game but could not hold off a late Wichita State (7-21, 4-11 American) push, falling 60-54 on Wednesday night at Bartow Arena.

Cali Smallwood led the Blazers with 14 points while Monae' Duffy recorded a double-double for the second consecutive game with 13 points and 13 rebounds. Eleecia Carter tallied 10 points on the night.

The Shockers were led by Treasure Thompson with 19 points. Abby Cater followed behind with 18 points and 10 rebounds and Jaida McDonald came away with 12 points.

Game Notes

Smallwood led the Green and Gold for the ninth time this season with her 14 points.
Duffy recorded 13 points and 13 rebounds for her seventh double-double of the season.
Duffy recorded a career-high four assists and matched her career-best five free throws (5-for-7).
Sofia Munoz added eight points to the stat sheet and led UAB with five assists.
Carter added 10 points, including two first-half three-pointers that helped spark the Blazers early lead.
UAB led for 31:00 of the game, compared to 3:45 for Wichita State.
The game saw 10 lead changes, the second most the season, and five tied scores.
The Green and Gold shot 35 percent from the field, 19 percent from three and 75 percent at the line.
The Shockers shot 39 percent overall, 20 percent from the perimeter and 77 percent from the free throw line.

How It Happened

UAB jumped out quickly, using Carter's perimeter shooting to fuel a 10-point scoring run and build an early cushion [14-4].
The Shockers scored the next few points to trail by five [14-9]
Wichita State trimmed the margin late, but the Blazers held the lead after the first [17-12].
The Blazers stretched the advantage to eight early in the quarter [20-12].
The Shockers responded with transition baskets and second-chance points [23-20].
Wichita State briefly grabbed the lead with a quick run late in the quarter [27-26].
Jordan Rosier scored inside and Duffy converted free throws late to help UAB reclaim momentum and take the advantage into halftime [30-27].
Both teams traded baskets throughout a defensive match, with neither side able to separate [34-34].
Smallwood converted a key second-chance opportunity to keep the Blazers in front [37-36].
UAB carried a three-point lead, setting up a decisive final period [41-38].
The Shockers opened the quarter forcing turnovers that led to extra possessions and points [48-45].
Wichita State used an 8-0 run late through the quarter to take control [49-48].
The Blazers struggled to generate offense late, scoring just 13 points in the frame compared to the Shockers 22 points to seal the comeback win [60-54].
