Aggressive. Physical. Relentless. Grantham’s Defense Taking Shape at UAB

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — If there's one thing clear through the first days of spring practice, it's this: UAB's defense is going to be aggressive. Under new defensive coordinator Todd Grantham, the Blazers are installing a system built on pressure, physicality and play making- a style that demands discipline and accountability, but rewards those who embrace it.
"You need to have discipline, accountability and toughness to fuel competitiveness," Grantham said. "That's what we're building here."
For a defense with plenty of new faces, that process is moving faster than expected- in part because several players already know what's coming. Safety Jotavian Pierce, a transfer from Oklahoma State, is among those familiar with Grantham's system, giving UAB an early edge as the unit comes together. "We're familiar with a lot of the things Coach Grantham is bringing," Pierce said. "It's not nothing new- we just have to do what we've got to do."
That familiarity is helping lay the foundation for a defense designed to attack. Pierce said the emphasis is simple: be physical, finish plays and create turnovers. "Defense sets you up to make plays," Pierce said. "So if you don't make the play, that's on you." Linebacker Ike Esonwune, another Oklahoma State transfer, said the system challenges players mentally as much as physically, but ultimately allows them to play fast and aggressively once mastered. "It's an NFL system," Esonwune said. "Once you study it, learn it and apply it, it's all going to start coming together."
The Blazers defense has three former Cowboys, who followed Grantham to the Magic City- Pierce, Esonwune and defensive back Draden Fullbright.
Grantham said early spring practices are focused on identifying roles and building a unit that can play complementary football- a key piece to winning in today's game. "There's a lot of guys on our team that have something to prove," Grantham said. "We've got things to prove, all of us."
Beyond scheme, players point to trust as the foundation of the defense's early progress. Despite coming from different programs, Pierce said the group has quickly begun to bond through workouts, meetings and daily interactions. "At the end of the day, we trust each other," Pierce said. "That's how we're going to play."
As spring continues, that trust- paired with Grantham's aggressive approach is shaping what UAB hopes will become a defining identity on defense in 2026.
