UAB Falls to South Alabama in Alabama Showdown

AUBURN, Ala. β The UAB volleyball team dropped a 3-1 decision to South Alabama on Friday inside Neville Arena.
The two teams traded points throughout the early stages of the opening set, with the score knotted at 9-9 following an Addyson Smock kill. A Mia Reese kill gave the Blazers a 19-17 advantage late in the set, but a 6-1 Jaguar run put South Alabama in front. The Jaguars held on to take the highly contested first set, 25-23.
The back-and-forth battle continued in the second set, with a South Alabama service error evening the score at 11-11. A kill by Kennedy Vaughn made it 17-16 in favor of the Jaguars, but South Alabama responded with five straight points to create separation before taking the set, 25-18.
The Blazers flipped the script in the third set. A 4-0 UAB run gave the Blazers a 7-4 advantage early, and another 4-0 spurt later in the set pushed the lead to 16-11. A kill by Delaney Bowser extended the advantage to nine at 24-15 before Reese closed out the set with a kill, 25-17.
UAB jumped out to a 6-3 lead in the fourth set before South Alabama answered with four straight points to take a 7-6 advantage. The Jaguars used a strong middle stretch to build a 19-12 lead, but the Blazers battled back. Back-to-back UAB points cut the deficit to 22-20, but South Alabama held on for the 25-22 set victory to secure the match, 3-1.
Vaughn finished with a team-high 15 kills and 15 digs for a double-double, while Makayla Meister added 14 kills while hitting .324. Rachel McCollum also recorded a double-double with 27 assists and 15 digs. Reese had the Blazers' third double-double of the match with 12 kills and 11 digs.
UAB closes out the weekend with a road matchup against Samford on Sunday for the Donate Life Match. First serve from Pete Hanna Center is set for 4 p.m.
