UAB Comes Up Short in Pair of Matches at Lou Carnesecca Invitational

QUEENS, N.Y. – The UAB volleyball team dropped a pair of matches Friday at the Lou Carnesecca Invitational, falling to East Texas A&M, 3-1, in the opener before a 3-1 defeat to St. John's in the nightcap.
MATCH ONE: EAST TEXAS A&M 3, UAB 1
Both teams traded points early in the opening set before UAB rattled off seven consecutive points to take an 11-6 lead. After a service ace brought East Texas A&M within three at 13-10, the Blazers answered with an 8-1 stretch to build a 21-11 advantage. Mia Reese finished the frame with a kill as UAB took the set, 25-16.
The Lions established an early 12-5 lead in the second set, but UAB steadily chipped away at the deficit, pulling within one at 15-14 on a Rachel McCollum kill. East Texas A&M moved ahead 21-17 before the Blazers scored four straight to tie the set. The Lions held off UAB's late charge, taking the frame 25-23 to even the match.
The third set featured several lead changes as neither side gained more than a few points of separation. With the score 19-18, East Texas A&M used a 4-0 run to create a 23-18 cushion. The Lions finished off the set, 25-22, moving within one set of the victory.
East Texas A&M took control in the fourth set, creating separation midway through the frame and closing out the match with a 25-15 win.
Kennedy Vaughn led UAB with 16 kills, followed by Makayla Meister with 15. Annastiina Tarkkanen recorded 24 assists, while Delaney Bowser posted a team-high 22 digs.
MATCH TWO: ST. JOHN'S 3, UAB 1
The Blazers and Red Storm exchanged points throughout the opening set before a Mia Reese block put UAB ahead 14-12. A 3-0 stretch, capped by a Rachel McCollum service ace, put the Blazers back in front 19-18 after the hosts had taken the lead. St. John's responded late in the frame, taking down UAB 25-23.
A Mia Reese kill tied the score at 4-4 in the second set before the Red Storm pulled away during the middle portion of the frame. The hosts secured the set, 25-14, to take a 2-0 match lead.
UAB came out strong in the third, opening an 8-4 advantage behind a Rachel McCollum kill and a Mia Reese service ace. The Blazers maintained control and led 16-11 before St. John's rallied to even the score. UAB regained its footing late, scoring the final points to take the set 25-19 and extend the match.
The Blazers opened the fourth set with four straight points and later held an 8-2 advantage following another Reese kill. St. John's gradually erased the deficit, tying the frame at 12-all before taking control down the stretch. The Red Storm finished with a 25-20 win to close out the match.
Reese paced UAB with 13 kills, while Addyson Smock recorded a team-high eight blocks. McCollum finished with 21 assists.
The Blazers conclude play in Queens Saturday with a 9 a.m. CT first serve against Rider.
