Kevin Devitt is in his fourth season as an assistant coach at UAB under head coach Robert Ehsan.
In his first year in Birmingham, Devitt helped UAB continue to serve as one of the top defensive teams in the country during the 2016-17 season, ending the year first in Conference USA and 25th in the NCAA with 4.9 blocked shots per game.
Junior forward William Lee became the first player in school history to win the Conference USA Defensive Player of the Year award in consecutive seasons, finishing the year first in the league and 20th in the country with 2.4 blocks per game. Lee was also selected to the All-Conference USA Second Team, marking the third straight year in which he was named all-conference.
Lee is also only the fourth player in league history to be named Conference USA Defensive Player of the Year twice. In addition, Lee earned a spot on the All-Conference USA Second Team.
Devitt returned to UAB following one season as an assistant coach at Wright State. He spent three years at UAB, including one season as the director of operations after previously serving as the administrative assistant and associate director of operations during the 2012-13 and 2013-14 seasons. The Blazers took their first-ever Conference USA Tournament Championship in 2015, advancing to the Round of 32 at the NCAA Tournament with a 60-59 win against No. 3 seed Iowa State.
Devitt joined UAB’s staff after spending the previous three seasons as the top assistant and recruiting coordinator at Roosevelt University in Chicago. During his tenure at Roosevelt, Devitt helped revive the basketball program, which had been dormant for the past 20 years. The Lakers showed tremendous improvement as he helped lead them to a 13-game win total improvement over the course of three seasons. Devitt also coached and recruited two All-Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference players in Tyree York and Jeremiah Jackson.
Prior to Roosevelt, Devitt spent three years in the high school ranks, two seasons at Richards High School in Oak Lawn and one season at Lindblom High School of the Chicago Public League.
Devitt’s coaching resume also includes working the Reebok Breakout Challenge in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, as well as the Jim Whitesell Basketball Camp and the Dwyane Wade Skills Academy.
A 2010 graduate of DePaul University, Devitt aided Chicago area players in promoting their skills to prospective colleges, organizing and maintaining the South Suburban Fall Showcase League from 2008-2010. The fall league featured over 200 prospective student-athletes and was recognized as one of the top showcases in the state.
Devitt also founded the Chicago High School Classic, a high school all-star game that recognized the top 30 graduating seniors in the state of Illinois. The contest, which was played annually from 2005-09 and aired on Comcast CN 100, featured over 80 student-athletes who went on to compete at the NCAA Division I level. Devitt’s Chicago High School Classic featured players such as Robert Covington of the Philadelphia 76ers and Brandon Paul of the San Antonio Spurs.
Devitt married the former Alex Ahlgren in June 2017 in Chicago in a ceremony performed by UAB head coach Robert Ehsan.
