Ty Margenthaler was named an assistant womenโs basketball coach in 2025. Margenthaler enters his second season at UAB and was named the Associate Head Coach for the 2026-27 season. ย
As an assistant coach during the 2025-26 season, he played a key role in the development of UABโs forward group. His work with the Blazers frontcourt helped strengthen the teamโs interior presence on both ends of the floor.ย
Under Margenthalerโs guidance, UABโs five forward players combined for 696 points while making an impact on the glass and defensively. The group totaled 476 rebounds, including 127 offensive rebounds and 349 defensive rebounds, while also adding 27 blocks โ highlighting their physical presence in the paint throughout the season.ย
Margenthaler also helped guide Cali Smallwood to American Player of the Week and Honorable Mention while also helping Sofia Munoz to an American Freshman of the Week honor. The Blazers finished 26thย nationally in three-point percentage and 40thย nationally in three-pointers per game. UAB led the American in 3-point percentage (35.2) and 3-point field goals made (8.0). UAB was second in the American for field goal percentage (43.4%) and free throw percentage (73.6%).ย
Margenthaler helped guide Smallwood to ranking fourth nationally in three-pointers per game (3.1), tied for 17thย in three pointers (93) and 20thย in three-point percentage (41.9%). Smallwood also ranked first in the American in 3-point percentage, first in 3-pointers per game and seventh in scoring (14.1).
Margenthaler has over 20 years of coaching experience, including four seasons as a head coach. He comes to UAB after previously spending one season at North Alabama as an assistant coach. He helped guide a UNA player to Third Team All-ASUN, two Player of the Weeks and two Newcomer of the Weeks.ย
Before his time with the Lions, Margenthaler spent a season at Pittsburgh where he served as an assistant coach and defensive coordinator and worked closely with the post players. During his lone season with the Panthers, he helped guide forward Liatu King to All-ACC First Team, ACC Most Improved Player and ACC Player of the Week during the 2023-24 season.ย
He spent the 2022-23 campaign at South Dakota as the assistant coach where he helped sophomore point guard Grace Larkins earn First Team All-Summit League honors as she became the first player in league history to rank in the top five in points (17.5 ppg), rebounds (8.0 rpg), assists (4.4 apg) and steals (2.1 spg).ย
Prior to South Dakota, Margenthaler spent six seasons at Saint Louis including his last four years as the associate head coach. The Billikens made three WNIT appearances during that span and reached the WNIT Elite Eight in 2021. Saint Louis marked his second stint with head coach Lisa Stone, following five seasons on her staff at Wisconsin. During their time in Madison, the Badgers were the 2007 WNIT Runner-Up, set a program record of 23 wins and made the 2010 NCAA Tournament.ย
In between those two stops, he spent four seasons (2011-2015) as the head coach at SEMO. Margenthaler helped rebuild the program that was coming off back-to-back 21-loss seasons when he took over. In 2013-14, Southeast averaged 63.4 points per game, which was a 10-point per game increase from when Margenthaler took over.ย
Other assistant coaching stops for Margenthaler includes Samford, Bradley and SIUE. He served as the recruiting coordinator at each stop. He has coached a pair of A-10 Players of the Year, seven All-Big 10 selections and one USA Basketball selection.ย
Margenthaler comes from an experienced basketball family. His father, Jack, coached menโs basketball for 15 seasons at Western Illinois and 11 years at SIUE before retiring. His brother, Matt, has been the Minnesota Stateโs head menโs basketball coach since 2001.ย
After collecting All-State honors as a senior at Macomb High School and playing two years at Indian Hills Community College (Iowa), Margenthaler spent his final two season of his career under the tutelage of his father at SIUE. He averaged 16.0 points and started in every game for the Cougars.ย
Margenthaler graduated from SIUE with a bachelorโs degree in physical education/kinesiology in 1997.ย
Margenthaler and his wife, Julie, have two sons, Brice and Nate.ย
