BIRMINGHAM, Alabama. - Number 18 UAB and Cincinnati took turns firing shots, but none hit the mark as the Blazers and Bearcats battled to a 0-0 tie in Conference-USA play at UAB's West Campus Field, Sunday afternoon.
The tie broke a five-game win streak for UAB. The Blazers are 9-3-2 overall and 3-1-2 in C-USA play. It was the second straight 0-0 tie for Cincinnati against a ranked team. The Bearcats tied Saint Louis this past Wednesday. The Bearcats are 5-7-2 overall and 3-2-2 in league play.
UAB seemed to have control early, but the Blazers missed several wide-open attempts. The Blazers outshot Cincinnati 6-1 in the first half. The second half was a complete turnaround as the Bearcats attempted five shots to the Blazers' one.
The Blazers had the only shot attempt of the first overtime and each team attempted a shot in the second extra period. The Blazers put the pressure on late, but missed a late opportunity when they could not reach a pass in front of a wide-open goal.
UAB goalkeeper David Clemente recorded four saves, three in the second half and one in the second overtime. Bearcat goalie Sacha Nathu had just two saves, one in the first half and one in the second overtime. He has not allowed a goal in the last 240 minutes.
The Blazers travel to face Marquette, Friday in Milwaukee. UAB finishes its home season next Sunday, Oct. 29, with a non-conference match against Georgia State. Match time is 2 p.m.
